Introduction
The Thorneyfield aims to cater for the needs of all visitors within the confines of a traditional Victorian built 3 storey mid terraced building.
We currently are a 5 bedroomed bed and breakfast house with possible plans to add a further guest room.
The following statement is a summary of our provision; if you have any specific questions then please feel free to call us and we will do our best to help you.
Pre-Arrival
- There is a bus stop between 200 - 250 meters from the entrance along a level path. There are frequent buses to Grasmere and Keswick at one end of the journey, or to Kendal and Lancaster at the other, with frequent stops along the route.
- There is a bus timetable at the bus stop and we also have a copy of the timetable displayed on our notice board.
- The nearest rail way station is Windermere which is 4½ miles away with frequent services to Oxenholme (Lake District), which is the main line station.
- Our website shows pictures of all of our rooms, which are situated on the first and second floors. Although the stairs are wide with a gentle climb, disabled guests should bear this in mind.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
- We offer our guests free parking via a combination of a parking space to the rear of the property, off street parking permits and car park permits.
- Both the off street parking and car parking options are situated close to the guest house.
- Assistance with luggage is offered to all guests.
- The entrance to Thorneyfield is accessed directly off the main road and by climbing three steps. At night the front of the house is lit by floodlights and there are lamps at each side of the front door to illuminate this for our guests.
Main Entrance & Reception
- Entrance is in to a hallway where there is a desk where we book guests in and also have a comments book. The door to the dining room is on the left of the front door.
- Through the hall way there is a display board with some information about local attractions and a small table with a number of other leaflets about the area.
- At the end of the hall way is our office and private living area through a door. If this door is shut, then please give it a knock if you have any queries.
- Guests are always escorted to their rooms with room and other amenities fully explained.
Public Areas - General (Internal)
- The guests dining room has a carpeted floor with fitted carpets to all the stairs, areas outside the guest rooms and the rooms themselves (with the rooms in the top floor all having had carpets laid in the last 12 months as of June 2008). The bathrooms all have cushion floor laid in them since June 2007.
Dining Room
- Breakfast is served in the breakfast room on the ground floor.
- The furniture in the room is flexible and can be moved to better suit the individual requirements of guests.
- The average underspace of each table is 22 inches or 53 centimetres. There is one round table and all the rest are square with legs at each end.
- We do not play background music in any area of the guest house.
- Waitress service is available for tea/coffee, cooked breakfasts and toast, with self service for fruit juices, cereals, fruit and croissants and preserves. Assistance is available if needed.
- Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and other diets are catered for.
- We offer the option of packed lunches to our guests.
Laundry
- Drying facilities are provided upon request.
Bedrooms
The five bedrooms are on the first and second floors.
- Each room has a television with teletext/subtitles and a DVD player in them with a library of DVD's kept on the landing on the first floor.
- Each room also has a radio/CD player in them and again there is a CD library on the first floor landing. (There are also a number of books kept in this area which guests are welcome to use.
- There is a small fridge in each room where guests can keep chilled drinks for their convenience.
- Carpets are all fitted short pile, with cushion floor in all bathrooms.
- Two rooms are large family rooms with a double and two single beds in each. One is situated on the first floor and one on the second floor.
- One double room (on the second floor) is the only guest room which is not ensuite, but has its own exclusive bathroom nearby.
- The other rooms are a twin on the first floor (with a double and single bed in it) and a double on the second floor.
- All rooms have both ceiling lights and wall lights over beds for the comfort of guests.
- The heating in each room is by gas central heating radiators which can be controlled by a thermostat.
Bathroom, Shower-room & WC (Ensuite or Shared)
- Room 1 bathroom has a door opening of 26 inches (62.4 cm). The shower edge is 8½ inches (21.25 cm). The toilet is 16½ inches high (39.6 cm) including seat. There is 9 inches (21.6 cm) clear space to the right hand side and 10½ inches (25.2 cm) to the left hand side. The wash hand basin is 29 inches (69.6 cm) high with a clear underspace.
- Room 2 bathroom has a door opening of 28" (67.2 cm). The shower edge is 6" (14.4 cm) high. The toilet is 16" (38.4 cm) high. It has 10½" (25.2 cm) of room on the RHS and 8½" (20.4 cm). The wash hand basin is 29" (69.6 cm) high with a clear underspace.
- Room 4 has a door opening of 26" (62.4 cm). The shower edge is 6½" (15.6 cm) high. The toilet is 16½" (39.6 cm) high. There is 9" (21.6 cm) clear space on the RHS and 10½" (25.2 cm) on the LHS. The vanity unit (in the bedroom) is 29½" (70.8 cm) high.
- Room 5 has a door opening of 24" (57.6 cm). The shower edge is 6½" (15.6 cm) high. The toilet is 16½ " (39.6 cm) high. There is 10½" of clear space on the RHS and 9" on the LHS. The wash hand basin is 29" (69.6 cm) high with a clear underspace.
- Room 6 bathroom has a door opening of 27" (64.8 cm). The shower edge is 6½" (15.6 cm) high. The toilet is 16½" (39.6 cm) high with a clear space all round it. The wash hand basin is 29" (69.6 cm) high with a clear underspace.
Attractions (Displays, exhibits, rides etc.)
- The famous "small house over the river", which is a National Trust property and the symbol of Ambleside is a short walk away, as is the Armitt Museum.
o The Wateredge is 3/4 of a mile walk or drive from Thorneyfield and as well as having a beautiful view over lake Windermere has regular boat tours round the lake and to Bowness and other stops.
Additional Information
- We are in the centre of Ambleside and are a very short walk from all the local shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as being a short drive or bus ride to nearby towns and villages.

Future Plans
- We are currently looking to bring a small double in to use which will have a separate bathroom. Both the room and the bathroom will be extensively refurbished with the bathroom being refurbished to a high specification and to have a bath in it to cater for guests who would prefer this to a shower. We estimate that this will be carried out by March 2009 at the latest with any updates on our website.
